5 Surpising Things You Didn't Know About Tarot

A dimly lit room, with strange artifacts all around, curtains in dark colors draped heavily around the room, oh! And a crystal ball. Always a crystal ball.  We’ve all seen a scene like this in a movie or tv show, yet with my years with tarot, I’ve never seen anything like that. Here are some surprising things about tarot that you probably didn’t know.

  1. It's not really about predicting the future: While people often associate it with fortune telling, it's primarily about self reflection, and gaining insight. The cards are a mirror of what is going on internally, and what is guiding the actions and challenges the person is currently experiencing. The symbols help tap into the intuition and inner wisdom, rather than telling what will happen.

  2. The “Meaning” isn’t always the same: Many things about tarot cards can shift in meaning depending on the reader, and the person being read. I know this is surprising to many, but if you attach meaning to a card differently than someone else, then that is how it will always read for you. Also, many times the interpretations can be very fluid depending on the context or question being asked. This is how you can tap into your inner wisdom.

  3. You don’t need to be a “Psychic” to read tarot: Here’s another surprising perspective for you. Everyone has psychic ability on some level, and many just don’t use it. Reading tarot can be as cut and dry as you want it to be. You can read directly from the book, or you can use your intuition to interpret why that tarot card is coming up. You may surpise yourself.

  4. There’s a Deep Connection to History and Philosophy: No one knows the history of tarot for sure, but it’s intertwined with various philosophical and esoteric traditions, including Kabbalah, astrology, and alchemy. The imagery and symbolism within the cards often hold historical and philosophical meaning, offering a deeper understanding of universal human experiences and archetypes.

  5. It can be a powerful tool for Personal growth and Problem-Solving: Other than just doing readings, you can use tarot to help you see a situation from a different perspective, gain new insight on challenges you’re facing, or find a new idea to journal or meditate on .
